Understanding and Answering Islam

Freedom is at the heart of the Christian faith. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free,” writes Paul, and for 2,000 years, Christians have rejoiced in the freedom that the gospel brings—freedom from sin; freedom to be truly human; freedom from the attempts by society to number, stamp and index us; freedom to not just know about God but to know God. According to the gospel, in Christ we are set free to be sons and daughters, not just slaves.

But Islam has a different view. The Qur’an does not allow humans to speak of God as father, but describes humans as slaves. Its narrow view of what it means to be human has flowed out (through channels like sharia law) into Muslim culture, where there are huge restrictions placed around freedoms we take for granted in the West—academic, religious, political, social, and familial. It is no accident that Muslim countries regularly top the list of places where religious freedom is under threat.

RZIM’s Understanding and Answering Islam in 2019 will explore the question of freedom by comparing the Christian and Muslim views of freedom. We will consider the huge implications that follow from these views—for individuals and for societies—while helping each other to think through how the concept of freedom provides an open door to share Christ with Muslim and secular friends.
