Billy Graham’s Funeral: A Day to Remember, A Man to Honor

It was a day to remember and a man to honor. Margie and I had the privilege of being invited to the funeral service of Billy Graham. With approximately 2500 there, gathered in a tent on the grounds of the Billy Graham Library, we witnessed the service that inspired and touched us deeply. It is possible that millions watched it around the world. Messages from the family and tributes from special friends over the years underscored the love his children had for him and the respect with which world leaders in Christendom held him.

I will never forget the emotions of the day. It was cold with the wind but warm with the impact of a faithfully fulfilled calling of a farm-boy turned preacher. Billy was as unique a voice as we have witnessed in our times. Shy as ever but bold in proclamation. Simple but not simplistic, authentic and the Bible his final authority. The farewell brought tears, but the impact of his life will remain in my heartbeat. The service was fitting. Songs of old with the message ever new. Evangelism was in his blood and the blood of Christ was his message. As Longfellow said,

Life is real! Life is earnest!

And the grave is not its goal;

Dust thou art, to dust returnest,

Was not spoken of the soul.

Billy was bid farewell by those who are well-known in proclamation, but all went to honor the one who did it best and with a humble heart. Farewell, dear servant of our Lord. May we follow your example with heart and soul. The itinerant life is a lonely life, and it is a call with a huge price. Thank you, Graham family. You honored a life beautifully lived and shared him with the world. Thank you from our homes to yours. Because of your sacrifice, many will be in the home Jesus has prepared for those who love Him. The funeral was really a call to what living really means. The great inviter will continue to invite through his impact. Today was a fresh call to all of us to recommit our lives to the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
